87. Bruges

Why do we call it Bruges?? Locally…the name is Brugge. And the nearby port is indeed Zeebrugge…Brugge on the sea! And we not choose to bastardise that name!!

Anyway….after six non-stop days….it was a very welcome rest day!!!

Catching up with the blog…washing etc…!!

And then a wander!

It remains a very special place…but very busy…

After a brief walk…I had had enough really!

Coffee…and spending far too much time securing accommodation en route through London…(not easy with bikes!)

But then…what a delight…a harp concert!!

It was so special….

This guy plays harps from all over the world…beautifully!

…& makes them too.

And from that escape…to another! To see the Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaerde…another unesco site here.

As Wikipedia notes… “The Bequines lived in semi-monastic communities but did not take formal religious vows. Although they promised not to marry “as long as they lived as Beguines”, they were free to leave at any time. Beguines were part of a larger spiritual revival movement of the 13th century that stressed imitation of Jesus’ life through voluntary poverty, care of the poor and sick, and religious devotion.”

Lovely place…and very few visitors despite the UNESCO status!

Our beer museum was closed today ( the only place thus far we have found reasonably priced beers)….so we wandered into town…& found this place…in a very lovely little square….selling very palatable Belgian Pils at half the price of everywhere else!!!!! And it was largely deserted!!

Guess what!!?? It was a Pizza Hut!! Haha!! We’re not proud!! And the beer was good and cold!!

We stayed for food too….open salad bar and a not-bad-at-all pizza…what’s not to like??!!
