86. Mechelen to Bruges

This was the sixth day on the trot of riding! Corey’s bum is sore….joining the club! But it has been a big stint…well over 650kms…250km of it in the rain! So we were both looking forward to getting to Bruges for a rest day (our last rest day of this year’s ride!!)

This was an interesting bridge early on in the ride…with the whole carriageway lifted up to allow barges to pass.

But generally…the first 60kms…was flat, straight and fairly boring….

We left the road for a lakeside coffee stop….

…and carried on…..

Thankfully things changed once we reached Ghent. (The Belgians do not use the “h”…god knows why we do!). Gent…..where we joined the Gent to Bruges canal…..

….and followed it all the way….!!

To Bruges!

I have been here a few times before….but all those visits were over 40 years ago! Before Bruges became so ‘famous’! We had wandered but 100 metres from our very central house….and we had already encountered five tour groups! Each with their numbered flag followed by bemused tourists. I cannot think of anything worse!

So…yes…hugely busy!

Even the guy at the beer museum (which sold relatively cheap grog) was bemoaning what Bruges had become. He is selling up!! And moving out.

And it was here that I finally found that toilet sign which made sense!! Hahaha!

I am sure he was fed up with picking shitty toilet paper out of the bin…put there by all those folk who habitually follow all those other instructions!

But…Bruges is still a wonderfully pretty place.

More to revisit tomorrow!
