24. Skradin (Krka National Park) to Split

20 May 2022

Today was supposed to be a relatively short ride….through the National Park and then 70km or so to Split!

But we were not allowed to cycle ‘through’ the park…so it was 5km return trip to the wonderful Krka Waterfalls…and an hour or so circular walk around and over the falls. Well worth the detour!! Cannot pick the best photos…so have included a few….

After the park…we then were well mis-mothered by Google once again…as our trail just ran out!! (It is frustrating in Croatia..that Google does not show any cycle routes. So you have to pick between driving routes and walking routes. And often those walking routes are just not cyclable!!… Can make it interesting!!).

Then found some nice and very quiet roads….for a nice 50km+ ride……slow at times…

….until we joined the one road down from the hills towards Split! A fantastic fast descent…but for the fact that we were sharing the road with trucks…leaving precious little room…! A couple of scary moments!

Once down on the flat, we skirted around the back of Split Airport to avoid the busy road….and ‘found’ a lovely stretch of coast, allowing us to bike waterside for around 10kms. Not a bad place for a quick getaway…with our lunch stop barely one minute from the airport!!

And then we ‘hit’ the city (Croatia’s second city after Zagreb)….and there was absolutely no provision for bikes. So it was a bit of an unpleasant manic ride…into the largely car-free historic centre. Phew!! Probably a city for cyclists to avoid…unless using it as a ferry stop!! (..which is why we are here!)

But it is a lovely city….so well worth a visit! (..just not by bike!).

Great accommodation here…in a quality two bedroom apartment, a stone’s throw from the Diocletian palace. And Ivan our young host (who lived upstairs) was just wonderful! Ground floor…in the middle of the city! You do long for that with heavy bikes to lug about!

Those Krk falls look superb Neil & great to see Split looking resplendent. It is very aptly named in English at least for indeed the earth does split on a regular basis there what with the regular earthquakes!
