17. Ronchi dei Legionari (Trieste Airport) to Piran (Slovenia)

13 May 2022

Cake for breakfast!! (..as well as Croissant and a large bowl of fruit)…but we really could not manage the cake!!

The team were up early…making their gelato for the day…! A slightly incongruous mixture of businesses…B&B…gelateria….bar…and coffee shop…but is seems to work well…and was busy when we turned in at 9.30…and plenty of custom at 8am as well!

A thought occurred to me: the era of automatic everything…is this a Covid thing?? (& I am talking in the bathroom now). Touchless taps….touchless dryers…touchless toilet flushes…touchless soap dispensers…etc! They are appearing everywhere! Even in gelaterias (or maybe particularly so!?). And as I laid my wee toilet bag on the edge of the basin….I unwittingly set off the soap dispenser…which managed to load a number of dollops all over my toothbrush etc…before I realised what was happening!! Alas!

But in the shower…there was another ditto device…which really did not cut the mustard (in terms of quantity)…for a good wash!

Reminds me…I went to a toilet back in Chioggia…and for the life me I could not find the flush mechanism!!  Now in Italy…they can be all over the place! Foot pedal. On the side wall. Lots of places you might not expect. But this one was invisible!! So I went and challenged Martin to find it!! And he too failed!! We both left our deposits in the bowl for the next man! (..thankfully only the results of our hydration!!)

Anyway…..back to the journey…have been trying to avoid SP14, the main road into Trieste for some time…but  today we could not avoid it! Attempts to find a sea level route ended in failure…but with a Motorway running immediately parallel…the road actually became quieter as Trieste approached…and it turned into a very nice ride…high on the cliff.

Coffee at the city lido…

……and then we powered through town, along the waterfront…and before we knew it were approaching the Slovenian border. We just managed to avert a misdirection to the motorway…(!!)…

and shortly thereafter we found the most delightful bike trail…and within 100m or so we were in Slovenia!!

Great signage, great surface…altogether the best track so far!! Following an old railway Line (from Trieste to Pula).

30kms on…and we arrived in Piran and a welcome swim! A delightful venetian town…and a great house for a couple of nights (…rest day tomorrow…washing time!).

Piran really is a pearl….with a really nice vibe to it.

Covid signs are everywhere…but we have not seen a single mask here in Slovenia thus far….!!
