16. Caorle to Ronchi dei Legionari (Trieste Airport really!)

12 May 2022

It was with little regret that we were obliged to leave the coast from Caorle…to avoid another string of hotels…which extended East as far as one could see!!

Great breakfast at our lovely family run pizzeria/albergo…..including a huge bowl of fresh strawberries!

Lots of big canals still around…so route options tended to lead onto busy roads over the few bridges.

So….a bit hectic…and a bit tedious for the first hour or so…on dead straight (Roman?) roads!!

But after coffee…as we moved further from the lagoons….we found some alternative routes…even some single tracks….so it was a pleasant couple of hours, albeit adding 15km or so on the intended distance.

I had selected a Booking.Com 9.9 rated B&B for the night…over 9.5 is usually worthy of a slight detour! Lovely rooms (with fantastic air-conditioning which was so welcome as we arrived very hot and sweaty!!)…sitting atop a Gelateria! Martin happy!!

They also serve beer…so rehydration possible on site!!

But a weird town…sitting at the East end of Trieste airport runway. Having said that…we have not heard one plane take off yet…so clearly not a busy airport!!

After beers we headed off into the town centre. But could not find it really. It is that sort of town…with a second rate bar probably being its epicentre!!

But we did find a neat beer-focussed  restaurant….very stressed staff with only two on…but they accommodated us and the food was great, despite the untrue discouragement on all the tables!!

One of the highlights had to he the urinal!! Never seen anything like it…very stylish…but possibly not so functional!!

So…tipped over 1,00km first thing this morning!!

And… this is really the end of Stage One!! One quarter of the trip done (so soon!?)…& one third of the way to Athens! From here the original (two year old) plan…was to cycle off to the airport in the morning….for Chris to pick up his flight back to London on the very plane Martin was arriving on!! So slightly ironic/strange that Martin will be back here on Sunday for his flight back to UK…and return on Tuesday.

Last night in Italy….we turn the corner tomorrow…literally and figuratively…as we move on to Slovenia!!
