18. Piran

The straight line distance from the Italy border crossing to the Croatia border crossing…is only around 20km…so Slovenia certainly missed out when the coastline was divided up.

Interesting that Trieste only became part of Italy per se after the first world war. And…after the second world war… the Free Territory of Trieste was set up…and it was not until 1954 that the apportionment of territory was ’agreed’, the city of Trieste back to Italy…and parts South divided between Slovenia (including Piran) and Croatia.

Indeed…the final border line was not agreed by all sides until as recently as 1975!

All a long way to explain why our time in Slovenia is so short !!

So…domestic chores completed, we both enjoyed a good wander around the town, up to the cathedral…and a ramble over the old town walls (classic Venetian)……..before Martin set off…ALONE!!!…into Croatia (not far away!!)..to pick up his hire car, ready for the drive back to Trieste airport (with bike!).

And then we will go over our separate ways tomorrow…for three days!! More on that in due course.

So…for now…some more photos of the lovely Piran:
