73. Bilbao

A day off!

And…another off day!!

The sun apparently rose around 7.30…but it remained dark and brooding….and then heavens opened once again. Thunder and lightening…very very frightening! Well, not really…just very very wet!!!

We are always grateful when rain happens on rest days…better than trying cycle in it…but all the same…it is disappointing.

The rain did stop for the afternoon….and allowed a walk across the city to visit the Guggenheim.

And there…in the entryway…..were hundreds and hundreds of specially designed ‘umbrella lockers’. Haha! Put your umbrella in…remove the key card and off you go! Never seen them before. But it tells a story about how much it rains in Bilbao! So perhaps we should not be surprised about the miserable weather!

I gave Nae a hard time about not wanting to accompany me to see the art…cultural retard that she is!! Who wants to see a plain blue canvas she said!? Haha! However…after my visit I had to agree with her. Somewhat underwhelming exhibition of pop art. I thought Shennae would like this one though! Black…not blue.

And not even finished!! That bottom left corner….a visual allegory for unfinished business, I might imagine!

A few Warhols…and Liechtensteins…but overall…not overly exciting…for the cultural retard I am evidently becoming!

It was great however to see inside the building…

…..and its towering spaces.

I am not sure the circulation between galleries worked overly well, but it is certainly an impressive structure! More showpiece however for it does not integrate well into its surroundings and the outside spaces (& main entrance)..

…just do not work very well.

And the Basque language remains a fascination. Here are two signs saying the same thing..one in Basque and one in Spanish. No commonality at all really. And nothing like Portuguese either.

After the afternoon’s brief respite…the clouds descended once again…and as we sat having a beer around 6pm…it felt like it was getting dark once again. So weird! So dark! I have never experienced such darkness in Spain…so long before dusk! One might expect it in London….but in Bilbao?

And then…of course…it started raining again…as we sheltered under cafe umbrellas chomping on Cantonese noodles…making the most of the ethnic diversity!
