OMG….Martin has only two riding days left before he leaves!!
That went quickly!
But today did not.
We bought two of these!! And cycled across the water all the way to Crete!!
Actually…that was a lie…so of the above monster distance, we rode less than four of them!! (Great NZ invention by the way!)
Otherwise…an eight-hour ferry ride!! (This is Rhodes old town from atop our ferry)
Actually it was not a bad voyage at all. A “Blue STAR” ferry…a cut above most Greek ferries. Luxurious one might say….certainly for a ferry!! And quick!!
Two two stops en route added a bit of interest.
Firstly, Karpathos…another hugely mountainous island!!
And with a surprisingly tiny landing area for such a bit boat!! Complete chaos as passengers got off and on, trucks and cars got off and on….ALL at the same time!! You can just imagine the health and safety tsars in UK and NZ tut-tutting….but hugely efficient, and we are on our way again in next to no time! Especially as they have to load everything to cater for another five stops of folk getting off and on…it is mind-jangling jigsaw!
And then to Kasos…
…A much smaller island (with a much bigger landing area!)…
……and…on to Crete! The far north east corner…..
…before pulling into Sitia at around 7.30pm.
Had to laugh…for our apartment for the night was some 200m ‘inland’…and located on top of a cafe. Which was closed! As were all four of its neighbours…we we wondered why…a combination of Sitia being miles from nowhere?…and it being Sunday!!?
And needing ‘security’…haha…the friendliest dog!
Until we happened on this…!! Very busy and vibrant wee place in fact!
And after beers and food….a delicious dessert arrived (..but we did not order this….!)…as a gift, together with two glasses of raki!! Then we discovered another bottle of Raki as a gift in our apartment!! Lovely folk here in Sitia!
Pleasant day…though I would almost always prefer a night ferry. But then again…we would have missed Sitia!
