Yesterday was a wonderful big day!
Today was just a big day!
Of the above mileage…we cycled ‘just’ 133 km. And all of the ascent of course! Not an abnormally huge day…EXCEPT…we did not start cycling until 12.30pm!
So we did not arrive at our ‘destination’ until nearly 7pm!
It was a big day!! And deserved too many beers at the end of it!
Indeed…it was such a rushed day….that there was no time for photos! No time even for a coffee stop…grabbing sustenance on the ferries instead.
….arriving for a brief stop at Andros en route on our first ferry….

…and into Rafina!

This is a port East of Athens (not far away!)…..& so it was a bit of a shock to have to deal with the traffic! Busy…busy…busy…! Not great riding.
But no time for photos etc…as we rushed to catch our ferry at Skala Oropou…

Well over 60kms…and we got there in under 2.5 hours..including a water stop!
…indeed we arrived…bought our ticket…and rode on…not one second early/late!! Good job …for the ferry only runs hourly!
Leaving Oropou….

….arriving at Eratrea….

We rode off the ferry at 15.40…with only another 70km to go!
And so to Prokopi!
Iain and I have visited before! Our last ride through Evia!
When it just hosed down!
Today,….no rain…..but it was just grey and fairly miserable! But no real worries for we had a big 600m hill to climb…and the lack of hot sun was welcome!
Glorious descent though…down to Prokopi…a small town in the middle of the island.
Best known…(?) ……as the resting place of Saint John the Russian! (..don’t ask!)
Given the distance today..and vagaries of ferries etc….we had not booked any accommodation!
So we rolled into town….and this was the only place we could find!

The lovely bar lady…asked a local to phone Maria…and he then passed the phone to me…and Marla advised that yes…they had rooms (35 euros each)…and someone else would be round in ten minutes to show us how to get in!
Quite weird…but it all worked!
And the delightful bar lady showed us where we could store the bikes!
In the beer store….quite appropriate really!

So….unusually…no photos of the ride today. It was just buy, busy, busy…!
And if I’d stopped to take photos…we would have missed our ferry!
So..it was a late one!
But a great evening…cheapest beers in Greece so far!
And… wonderful food!

Odd really…Evia is the second biggest Greek island..(squeezing in between Crete and Corfu).…but it attracts no tourists!
We spent a couple of weeks here last year…and there are so many gorgeous places to visit….!
But no….it remains a bit of a secret…only open to the locals….
…….with prices to match!!
