21. Neapoli to Avlemonas (Kythera)

It was a nice relaxed start to the day…as we only had to roll down the hill to our 9am ferry.

I had booked the trip on line…but had never received anything to confirm the booking! Unusual! But…a canny bit of advice….I had taken a screen shot of the booking confirmation during the booking process! And the booking reference number was all they needed to confirm the booking when we boarded. Had I not done that…I am not sure what would have happened!

Nice little ferry…which simply plies the route Neapoli to Kythera every day of the year.

It was wild and windy by the time we arrived on the island…..and it all looked a bit bleak.

This is looking back from the hill.

We found our accommodation at Avlemonas (no problem checking in at 11am!…not checking out at 4pm tomorrow!). Lovely spot!

But we made the mistake of ordering a coffee at the cafe in the prime position. And the bill…for two single shot cappuccinos…was over 11 Euros. Over NZ$22.00! For real?? That is far and away the most expensive coffee ever! Simply ridiculous. 4.40 for each coffee…and 2.40 for the accompanying bottle of water…which – everywhere else – is complimentary! Shocking! And made us a bit wary about this place!!

Sure..it is probably the ‘prettiest’ place on Kythera. But not a patch on Kyparissi and so many places on the Peloponnese mainland! Bonkers!

Anyway…to get over the shock we went for a bike ride to see the island. And to be honest….our impression did not improve greatly for quite some time.

It was windy and quite hard cycling….. (did that change the mood?…I think not!)……but…it is just bleak. This is the best of a bad lot of pictures!!

We made it to Potamus….

And then stopped for lunch at Mylopotamus. (There is a theme here….not unconnected with hippopotamuses!…Water-horses!)…which was lovely to be fair.

But we returned to Avlemonas…both of us thinking that this is not an island we would rush back to!

This is gorgeous! “Aphrodite’s bath” apparently……

….and this is our accommodation ….

but not enough to prompt a return visit!!

The saving grace…was the lovely family taverna…

Lovely food…and just friendly!

Only one other table though………

Changeover tomorrow! Iain…!!!!
