69. Cudillero to Colunga

Yet another double tonne!!

And a fairly memorable…or unmemorable….day’s cycling.

It was cold. Sometimes cold and wet. Occasionally biking jackets were removed…only for them to be put back on again ten minutes later as the sun disappeared behind grey clouds once again.

But it was not just the weather. It really was a somewhat ugly ride….not conducive to photo-taking.

I made the mistake of taking the ‘shorter’ route (no, not a short cut really!)…which took us through Aviles and Gijon….and the bit in between was plain ugly. Lots of big industry…factories belching out huge white plumes of god-knows-what….beside a plethora of dilapidated railway lines. Steel, glass and Dupont are apparently the main culprit from what I can gather…!?

We were so underwhelmed as we approached Gijon…that we had no plan to stop…but as we sped through the old city, and past its city beach….that was probably a mistake! It did not look too bad at all!

The disappointing day was not helped by my having to pump up my rear tyre three times today! This is becoming a problem!

Things certainly improved as we approached Colunga (deputising for our planned stop in coastal town of Lastres…which was ‘full’)…& the sun even made an appearance for our evening beers…and backgammon. (2-1 to me for the second night running!).

Not an exciting town…but we both slept well..in our basic hotel (with great bike storage…but nothing else except a bed!)..the last two rooms I could find for miles and miles around!).
