We had planned to stop over night at Sirmione…the classic old town poking out into Lake Garda…..but decided that we would avoid the accommodation difficulties (very pricey!!)…and head on to Verona…so we knew it was going to be another long day (before a day off!).
And it rained. All day….except the last 5kms or so. So not the best day…and a long wet ride!!
The road to Brescia was a dual carriageway…so we lost ourselves a number of times navigating tiny roads and tracks to avoid the big road. Good fun.
We were soaked by the time we stopped for coffee at Brescia…with only 80kms to go!! If we had not pre-booked our wee apartment in Verona…we might have shortened the day….
Shortly after Brescia…we joined up with a delightful and well signed cycle route winding its way all the way to Desenzano on Lake Garda. (Sorry…only one photo…just too wet!)…and then just 10kms or so around the lake to Sirmione for lunch.
A classic fortress of a town….at the end of a long thin peninsular with a big moat at its entrance.
Lovely…but surprisingly busy……with lots of sodden tourists.
Two hours on to Verona turned into three as we got well mis-mothered by Google….when we ended at Verona’s inland port. A monster truck and freight centre…with trucks everywhere…and two lonely cyclists!! It was very bizarre!! And finding our way out of the maze…took us a while!!
The apartment is good…with a nice secure garage to avoid heaving the bikes up four floors !! But not very central so we bussed into town for the evening. Felt very organised buying bus tickets on line…but for the life of me I could not activate them…so we travelled for free! Masks still compulsory on busses….sort of!
Both fairly knackered! Beers…and a kebab was perfect really! Verona looking as lovely as ever…as we parked up in the gorgeous Piazza del Erbe.
A quick tour of the wonderful Arena (& fond memories of seeing Aida there a few years ago)
…but I tweaked my calf waking around…felt like cramp…but would not go away!! So it was a slow hobble from the bus back to bed!!
