7. Peniscola to Vilafames

We said our farewells to Iain this morning….as he headed back by train to Collioure with the third bike. We did not envy him his day of jumping on and off regional trains…for you cannot take bikes on the fast inter-city spanish trains! Alas!

So now it was just the two of us!!

And what a gorgeous day of riding. Much shorter…as I wanted to visit the little gem of Vilafames!

Off road all day…on some fantastic trails. Along the coast.

And then up into the hills….with some seriously steep sections which had both of us sweating…..(despite the lack of heat!)

Before arriving at Vilafames before 1pm!!

So plenty of time to relax…..and to visit the town.

The perfect day really!

Much quieter today!! Hahaha!!

Iain took off with the old Scott….for it seems like the Merida and the new Lapierre have both recovered from their prior issues. Both riding like a dream! With no “battery stress” whatsoever….(yet!!)..with both bikes – for example – managing today’s ride with just the one battery!

But…Vilafames is really only a day-trip place. So everything open for lunch only….and closed in the evening! We found this delightful(!) bar…

….and then ‘treated’ ourself in “the” hotel restaurant! So we ordered a steak (no sides etc on the menu…).. and it arrived, sitting on a soggy bed of fries. And nothing else! Alas…..we did not see a vegetable on anyone else’s plate either!!

On that subject….evening food has not been great! Probably mostly our own issue…for restaurants do not open until 8 or 9pm…by which time knackered bodies are all but ready for bed! So we have had to mostly make do with “convenience food”…..the occasional seriously good tapas aside!

Breakfast/lunch places however have been great! Gorgeous bakeries…and wonderful sandwiches.
