Our last day in Greece! And it has been as wonderful as ever!
After our efforts to get to Ammoudia yesterday…we did not really have far to go today…40km or so…or so we thought!
So a lazy morning doing washing etc (which dried within the hour!)..before setting off with a detour to Parga. Another town I have never heard of…!
Very pretty town with a spectacular castle, and lovely beach….if you could actually see any of it!! Absolutely rammed…even at midday! (I guess it is Saturday!)
A slow coffee at one cafe…and then lunch at the immediately neighbouring table in another cafe. That sort of day really!
…before setting off for our last beach session in Greece! 200m down from the main road…
…but we took the wrong road…and ended up in the middle of a resort!! Not wishing to go up…to come down the right road….we just pushed the bikes along the beach! Harder work than you might imagine!!
The beach had – to my mind – the perfect texture. Sand apparently stops being sand at 2mm. Pebbles start being pebbles at 4mm. And in between it is “granules”. Here the beach was around 60% granules..and 40% pebbles up to about 10mm. So I…who does not carry a towel!….could comfortably lie down and the granules/pebbles would organise themselves just perfectly!! (..after I had scraped off the top couple of inches for it was scorchingly hot!).
Great swimming, full sun…and then we climbed up the road…to this!! At about 6pm!
It spitted a bit….and cooled down a lot…thunder, lightening, but no rain…so a very pleasant ride on to Igoumenitsa….until we came across three sets of terrifying dogs!!! Nae a bit shaken. So hard to know whether to slow down and befriend them….or hurtle past as fast as possible. Nae got caught in the middle of the two responses…and it didn’t work…!
Check-in….beers…a final Gyros…
and on to the boat.
Packed solid with a biker’s convention (of the motorised variety), teenage soccer teams and that whole range of folk you find on ferries in the middle of the night. (Our ferry left at 1 in the morning). Awful ferry. Classic Grimaldi grime.
Now….we had booked a cabin. And I know how difficult it is to share a cabin…earplugs notwithstanding…so I had booked a ‘superior’ two berth cabin! Hoping that the extra space would help!! But no….no two berths at all!! Just one tiny double bed!!! Hahaha!
So..a fairly sleepless night as I tried to grip my side of the bed to avoid disturbing sleep-on-her-front Nae (for I do tend to starfish, given half a chance!)…..and a pile of teenagers on the loose raised havoc next door…and the disco on the floor above carried on until the not-early-any-more hours!
We have shared lots of bathrooms…no worries….”courtesy flushes” being the secret!!….but this one took the cake…when the flush system stopped working altogether…in all cabins on our deck!! (….no pretending I do not put toilet paper in the pan!!).
We (ok…I) left a pile…for the poor cleaners!!
…love the ashtray location!!
