54 Mani Peninsular

We are here in Lagia for two nights…to give us a chance to explore this wonderful area a bit more!!

It truly is one of the most spectacular…and empty…parts of Europe. Folk fly off to the Greek Islands…..but this area leaves them for dead! (..just don’t tell anyone!).

A rest day today……so we took it nice and easy! A late start (washing machine in the basement!)…….and more brilliant scenery…

….as we dropped down to our first stop at Porto Kagio.

A “village which time forgot”…was the very mistaken description of Gumusluk in Turkey. Here, however…very apposite. For it truly felt like Greece of 50 years ago. Simple, beautiful and completely unspoilt.

No road…no promenade…

….and a real risk of getting wet feet as you ate!

From there…we headed down to the most Southern point of continental Europe.

Altogether gorgeous….

…and we found ourselves a lovely swimming place (just round the corner from the entrance to Hades..apparently…not a bad way to go!)

Nae with a beach to herself (I  was swimming off the rocks)…

Vithia…one of the larger Mani villages is all but deserted…but the refurb has started!

I tried to cycle around…but it got a bit difficult! Nae sensibly walked!

We carried on to Gerolimenas…for a late lunch! Another gem.

Look at that water!

…which I of course could not resist for my third swim of the day.

And then back up the hill……

….to Lagia, and our local tavern!

…another great day!!

Mani really is a gem……. Long may it remain ‘undiscovered’!
