50. Agia Pelagia to Kalyves

It turned out to be a big first day for Nae!  A double-ton!! She was expecting no less of course! But having  not been to bed at all on Friday night (before her flight) …and with a wake-up call at 4am UK time…..it was a sterling effort! And no…she had not been out celebrating her birthday…but back at work…tidying up a paper she had written for the Lancet!! (She has been in charge of the UK response to the migrant diphtheria outbreak).

But it had been a bit of a worrying night..! Our host had picked up the ‘repaired bike wheel’…with the news that the repairer thought we needed a new wheel. It was only when I was putting the wheel back on the bike that I discovered this….(certainly not there prior…for otherwise the tubeless tyre would not have held ang air at all!!!)

So it looks like when he was trying to straighten the wheel he had over-tightened a spoke!! Then just stuffed a tube into the tubeless tyre…without telling anyone!!! @#&$!

We had ridden 90% of last year’s ride with one broken spoke…so I was confident the wheel would hold together…but….!!

And it was fine…..but remains a concern! We will try to sort out in Chania tomorrow!

So….a lovely ride….lots of ups and downs…as we headed along the North coast.

Too much riding on the main road – difficult to avoid – but some good stretches all the same.

And we arrived here! What a great spot!! (..so much better than their Booking.com pics suggested!)…

Nae knackered!

….but we arrived in good time for a good spell on the beach…and in the water! The water however was weird…warm…then freezing! Seriously cold spots…so we guessed there was an underwater spring appearing just off the beach! Unusual! And about 40m offshore there was a huge flock of seagulls…coming and going. For a bath!! For no diving for fish etc. as if they know there is a spot of nice cold…fresh water….which they find better for bathing than salt water! Just like us? Maybe? Makes sense…but just a theory!

Kalyves was a nice wee place. Our accomodation in Agia Palagia had been spectacular…but it was just a tourist town, with very little of substance beyond the restaurants fringing the beach. Kalyves a much more real town! Cheapest beers in Greece thus far! And a monster plate of spit-roast pork for tea!! Yum!
