We planned an early start today\u2026for we were not quite sure how much climbing there might be! But\u2026the gods were against us! Or against John\u2019s batteries to be precise. He had plugged them into a wall socket, intended to house a table light\u2026.in turn controlled by the light switch!! So when we went to bed\u2026and turned out the light\u2026we also turned off his charger!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully John had woken at four\u2026and had checked his battery (they are always a source of worry!)\u2026so had discovered the problem and one completely drained battery! So we delayed our departure a few hours hoping that we might just have enough power for our big day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It turned into great day of riding today!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For much of the day we were riding alongside and just to the South of the Tagus River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lush farmland\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026..lovely up and down riding with nice views\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Then across the river\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026.and up into the hills!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Passed the 4,000km mark right here\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More hills\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

John\u2019s battery was on its last legs\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

but we just made it! To Fratel, a tiny place\u2026and our overnight stop in what can best be described as a road house. A small utilitarian hotel sitting beside the motorway\u2026run by a squabbling Fawlty Towers-esque couple. Her doing all the work. Him manning the bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clean sheets, cheap beer and good food. What more does one need?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
