We had planned a big one today. But certainly not this big!! A record-breaker\u2026in terms of kms in a day!! And a few metres of climbing to boot!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had opted for an early breakfast-less start. Nae is not a big breakfast eater\u2026. But gets hungry quickly! Today\u2026she had to be patient for the plan was to stop in Kalamata\u2026about 40kms down the road!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well\u2026up the road would be more appropriate description\u2026.with a climb to 550m first thing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lovely ride\u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2026.and a gorge to cross\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2026before pulling in for an olive-less breakfast on Kalamata\u2019s long beachside esplanade. Actually pastries\u2026.sausage roll things, cheese pies and a bacon and cheese thing! We were hungry!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was fairly miserable ride out of the city\u2026.on the main highway. Not busy..and plenty of room\u2026but a bit of a downer after Mani!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before we knew it\u2026.we were heading West on the same road we took last year\u2026from Sparta\u2026.heading over to the West coast. Had to laugh at our coffee stop en route: a garage forecourt, with tables set up\u2026with ashtrays\u2026right next to the petrol pumps!! You do not hear of many Greek petrol stations exploding!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

I generally ride to a fairly strict rhythm\u2026.20kms, stop (water\u2026and maybe a smoke!), 20kms, coffee stop, 20kms, stop (water\u2026and maybe a smoke! maybe? Read always!), 20kms, lunch stop! And we had agreed in Kalamata to re-set the day\u2026.and try to get through to Pyrgos\u2026..over 110kms away! The reason being\u2026the last ferry tomorrow leaves at 12.15\u2026..& if we did not get that, we would need to stay in Kyllini, rather than at our island destination\u2026and even Pyrgos was still three hours short!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And of course we needed to recharge batteries\u2026so everything worked well for a (very late!) lunch stop at the 80km (actually 120km) mark! Cafe\u2026on the roadside\u2026and on the beach (& there are surprisingly few on this stretch of coastline)\u2026for a long stop, much-needed lunch and a swim!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My second battery had just 1km left as we pulled in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it was closed! Alas!! No lunch! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But thankfully the guys were there preparing for their re-opening next week. (It really is such a short \u2018season\u2019 here!). So we could recharge the batteries\u2026..if not the stomachs! I had a few leftover crisps\u2026..AND a largely untouched packet of TWIGLETS\u2026which Nae had  brought over! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we did not die of starvation\u2026..and the beach (& swim) was great. Wild and largely deserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

30kms on to Pyrgos\u2026..and a very quaint 60\u2019s hotel (with the sort of manager who insists on giving you a receipt in an envelope). But what great value\u2026and \u2018breakfast included\u2019. The bathroom was a bit dated (understatement!)\u2026but it was a bit of a classic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were both buggared! Nae a bit wobbly. Periodically-speaking (\u2026not the best day for a record-breaker!)\u2026so it was not long before we were in town, enjoying beers and banter (& gyros!). Funny\u2026her own Strava had 1.5km less recorded\u2026so she clearly cycled less!! Actually\u2026I had to backtrack\u2026..to \u2018rescue\u2019 Nae after her back tyre softened. (..\u201drescue\u201d?\u2026I carry the pump!). Same bloody tyre. Frustrating! For if there was a hole\u2026you\u2019d see it! New wheel. New tape. New everything\u2026yet still..!! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pyrgos is not a tourist town. At all!! But\u2026Sunday night\u2026it was busy! With our \u2018El Greco\u2019 place..packed with families, and kids playing in the square. Reminded me a bit of Albania\u2026where everyone comes out in the evening\u2026whatever the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
