Martin\u2019s last day! And a double-ton to boot!! Last year, his last day involved 1,349m of climbing, before our terrifying plunge down to the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro\u2026..so we eclipsed it\u2026just (& unexpectedly!!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day started exactly like yesterday\u2026and 400m climb first off! But today\u2026without the wind\u2026so it was SO much easier!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

4km in\u2026and looking back down to Eloundas. Nice\u2026.but not very memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But a lovely ride\u2026.on the \u2018old road\u2019. In Turkey (and Albania etc)..when they build a \u2018new\u2019 road\u2026they destroy the old road in the process\u2026but here they keep the old one\u2026for local traffic\u2026and they make great cycling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lovely ride\u2026.a constant reminder that cycling in Greece is such a pleasure! Little traffic on surprisingly well-maintained roads. One wonders with all their economic woes..quite how they do it! The EU certainly helps\u2026.but\u2026it is surprising all the same!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over a series of hills\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2026and then along the coast towards the airport\u2026\u2026and Heraklion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A big city really\u2026but we had a great run through\u2026mostly on the waterfront\u2026before stopping for lunch at a wee beach bar at the West end if the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arranged to meet our accommodation man in Agia Pelagia\u2026only 45 minutes away! This was somewhere I booked back in February\u2026for my extended mid-term break!! I sort of never thought I\u2019d make it\u2026!! So I was looking forward to seeing if the reality matched the luxury promise!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only 12km and 100m of climbing\u2026no battery worries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then we went on a different route..(to avoid the big road!). Up..and up\u2026and up\u2026another 300m or so\u2026.and on\u2026.and on\u2026.and on\u2026..and\u2026surprise!!! My battery expired!! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is in fact a first!! Usually you know you will need to recharge\u2026but today I really did not!! So handed my battery and charger to Martin\u2026(who pushed on with lots of BOSCH battery capacity\u2026.!)\u2026.and said I\u2019d meet him at the next cafe\/bar\/restaurant\u2026and started pushing!! These bikes are so heavy\u2026it really is all but impossible to ride them up steepish hills without power assistance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not too far\u2026thankfully\u2026..! And I coyly messaged the guy we were meeting to say that we were going to be an hour late!! Half an hour of charging\u2026and a hope!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time for a beer!! Things could be worse!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that half an hour charge gave me\u2026just 7km..! Which dropped to 5, 3, 1\u2026over the next 2km\u2026!!\u2026\u2026just as we neared the crest of what I hoped might be the last hill!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And it was\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So we floated down to Agia Pelagia\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lovely guy greeted us on the beach\u2026.and walked us along\u2026to this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a bad spot for a few days\u2026!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A swim\u2026..and a few celebratory beers later\u2026.time to reflect!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Martin\u2026we have cycled a further 1,260kms\u2026in 14 days of riding\u2026so not a bad average\u2026certainly when combined with 16,626m of climbing! And I had imagined we had left the big climbing days behind in the Balkans!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u2026.just over 3,100km to date\u2026combined with \u2026 37,892m of ascent over 32 days on the bike! Funny really\u2026for every day we climb over 1,000m, there is a mini-celebration\u2026but in fact\u2026we are doing it every day\u2026and some\u2026on average!! (\u2026might explain the too many beers!!!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over half way now\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Happy as a chappy! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It really is a wonderful way to travel\u2026.every day is an adventure\u2026..and most days are just glorious!! The weather has not been kind to us\u2026but in fact it has been great cycling weather on the most part (Plovdiv\/Bulgaria aside!!)\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feeling fit and healthy (despite too many beers!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iain keeps reminding me that it is hotter in Manchester!! And it has been! Amazing really!! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\u2026I\u2019d prefer to be here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sad to see Martin go\u2026..again!\u2026 referencing last year..when with too many tunnels..and an awful ride out of Mostar\u2026I thought I might have put him off for life!! But apart for our ride through a drowned tunnel under the main road to Bodrum airport\u2026.not ONE tunnel this year!! Family commitments aside\u2026and despite the trials of parts of Turkey (bloody Bodrum again!)\u2026.he might even be back for a repeat! It\u2019s been great as ever!
