A breakfast-less start to the day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was worried\u2026for Martin is not one to move on an empty stomach! But the nearby cafe – who promised to be open –  was fast asleep\u2026so we decided to push on!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

25 May\u2026..and the very first day of setting off without a second layer!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A great start to the day though\u2026..with Google teasing us about childhood \u201cmystery\u201d drives. \u201cLeft\u201d \u201dRight\u201d \u201cLeft\u201d \u201cRight\u201d\u2026.etc..etc\u2026etc\u2026so you never knew where you might end up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

It did feel like that! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it worked! Despite some locals imploring us to go in the opposite direction! (They just didn\u2019t know how badly we were trying to avoid the main road!!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And it was a delightful ride! We even came across a Euro-Velo sign post!! (\u2026but just the one\u2026.!!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

But we did hit the big road eventually\u2026and it was ok! More developments of course! It used to be\u2026just a hill\u2026.!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We pulled in for breakfast at about ten! What a lovely welcome \u201cWelcome to my home\u201d\u2026as he helped store our bikes!  As we were waiting for our delightful cheese and herb omelettes etc\u2026We checked the oncoming ascent! 1,000m for the day\u2026and now only 900m to go!! And we had already climbed at least 500m\u2026so I opted to charge\u2026while we waited!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good decision!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could I get my battery out? No!\u2026..the unlocking mechanism had given out! (\u2026.another Shimano gripe.,). But after a lot of fiddling I managed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a worry though. For clearly something was broken\u2026and I need to change batteries regularly. So..I looked it up on line\u2026and it is an all-too-common issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSpare parts difficult to source\u201d\u2026etc etc\u2026.but then a really helpful post about how to remove the mechanism completely!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u2026that is what I did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it was missing two screws completely\u2026leading to it being so very loose and barely operable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But our lovely host\u2026.(do not we all?)\u2026.had a box of screws!. One of which sort of fitted\u2026! And secured the mechanism sufficiently! What a relief! (I needed two screws \u2026but hey, one is better than none!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(\u2026& what a star!!\u2026lovely guy!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And just about to put it all together again\u2026a tiny screw glistened in the sunshine! One of the missing two which had evidently fell out when I took it all apart!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So now all fixed!! We felt very pleased with ourselves!! And the delay was good\u2026as it happened\u2026to allow a good recharge of the battery. Very necessary\u2026!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On, on\u2026down the coast\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026turning inland past Ephesus! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(We have both been before\u2026so did not feel like a second visit!\u2026but having said that\u2026with more time\u2026it is certainly worth visiting a second time! (\u2026unlike Troy\u2026Pompeii etc)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Great lunch stop. At a butchers!! Just choose your meat\u2026and he then simply barbecues it\u2026with onion, chille, tomato etc! Delicious!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

And then\u2026the sting in the tail!\u2026.a big climb\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2026but a lovely climb up to 650m\u2026on a tricky gravel track (always trickier coming down!)\u2026..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026lovely views\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2026..before the slow descent to Soke\u2026which got better and better and faster and faster as the road surface improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u2026to Soke!! And a reminder not to speed!! These are everywhere in Turkey\u2026.and really look realistic\u2026at speed!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Pronounced with a \u201cY\u201d between the \u201ck\u201d and the \u201ce\u201d. But we had called it Soke\u2026\u2026as in \u201csoak\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Read on!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had expected the town (city) to be somewhat like Gonen (our first Asian stop)\u2026.but it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We found a hotel\u2026but only one room\u2026so we moved on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Found another\u2026which was doubling as a shoe shop\u2026so thought we might find a better lodging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Google was a failure. The next four \u201chotels\u201d did not exist any more!! So after an hour or so searching\u2026we reverted to the shoe shop!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we were right to pass the first time! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Grotty place. That worry about bed bugs. And the \u201creception area\u201d at the back of the shoe shop was so full of stuff\u2026.that there was no room for our bikes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The young manager pointed down the road. I shrugged! And then he took me across the road\u2026to a bus!! And indicated that we could keep the bikes\u2026in his bus (evidently where he slept!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u2026we agreed to stay! Bed bugs\u2026and all. We really did not have an option!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then\u2026he saw the bikes! And freaked out\u2026and (seriously!) went running down the road\u2026and a minute later turned up in a (very old) Ford Transit van. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We could store them in there!! So\u2026we did \u2026\u2026..not missing the possibility that if he wanted to nick our bikes\u2026we had just given him full permission\u2026.and carefully stowed them for him! Haha!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

VERY quick (cold) shower\u2026for this is not a hotel to ponder in. Off for beers to drown our accommodation sorrows!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google took us everywhere! But could we find a beer? NO!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An hour of trudging later\u2026honestly nowhere!\u2026.and Martin\u2026who is not quite as keen for a beer\u2026was thinking Coke\u2026and an early night!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might imagine!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But..no\u2026I was determined! And we eventually found a place! What a relief\/luxury\/delight(!!!)\u2026just five minutes away from where we started\u2026!! Those beers were well-deserved, and tasted magnificent!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soke\u2026..Soak\u2026! Not a place full of soaks at all.. We were alone\u2026 in what felt like the only place for a hundred miles which served beer!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It got funnier\u2026for after two beers\u2026Martin was ready to eat. I was still thirsty. And I suggested the restaurant next door. Too empty!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Martin patiently waited for me to have another beer\u2026and we left for food\u2026.only to go that restaurant next door\u2026which was filling up\u2026.and (you had to be there really)\u2026they served alcohol too! After an hour of searching we thought we had found the only place in Soke which served beer! There are in fact at least two!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serving a population of around 130,000!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A memorable place!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glasses were ice cold\u2026peanuts really salty\u2026.and the food was quite good too!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had been a big day!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So\u2026back to our hotel\u2026.and a bed-bug-worrying night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\u2026it is one those(many) hotels which have a key-dependent power supply (know what I mean?)\u2026so without any charging whilst aimlessly searching for beer etc\u2026..I had to set the alarm to wake me up in the middle of the night to swap batteries!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not really necessary. Not sure I slept at all!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

(\u2026now usually\u2026a trick\u2026the fridge socket is not cut off with everything else! \u2026so you can use it for charging when absent from the room!\u2026..but sadly\u2026not here! So, yes\u2026this dump does have a fridge\u2026but evidently never cold!!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
