62. Cambados

After five days on the go…(around 550km and 8,500m of climbing!)….today was a welcome rest day!

So time for washing, blog and a wander.

Funny little town really. Alternately very cute….

….and very ugly!

Huge bustling market..and fish market…

We had planned for this to be a beach day…but oddly thankfully the weather was not playing ball. Cool…even drizzling for a while….so swimming was not on the cards. And I say thankfully…for I chose the wrong town for any swimming anyway!!

So…a pleasantly quiet day….sorting stuff for tomorrow (the riding is suspended from tomorrow for two months!…as I fly off to Greece to meet Liz!)…and generally chilling.

Time to reflect too on our Portugal journey! As you can see (from a slightly inaccurate route map)…we zig-zagged across the country and saw heaps! The best bits were certainly inland…and away from the coastal population centres….where the roads and trails were deserted, making for great cycling.

The people were generally great…but we did wonder on occasion if they are quite as friendly as the Spanish. Maybe it’s a language thing?

It is a great value country to travel in. Generally cheap beer (another country where it is always cheaper to buy by the bottle: 1.20 for 330ml), food slightly cheaper than Spain, accommodation about the same price. We did however stay in some exceptional places…all of which averaged around the 100 euros a night mark for a two bedroom house/apartment. Almost all the accommodation really was top quality!

Roads in great condition. Drivers not as fantastic as the Spanish (they are simply peerless!)…but not too bad!

Some truly magical places. And exceptional landscapes. So all in all a great place to cycle! We had a blast!

Back to Campados…and gable ends clad in scallope cells…

….but shops closed for the eternal siesta…unless you are desperate…..

…..for chips or Doritos….hahaha

Alas…..John won at Euchre…(..lucky as ever!)! “All but” is the expression apparently….for he is now 6-5 up…and first to seven wins!! Tense!!
