33. Marrakech to Ben Guerir

The line on the map says it all really!

A relatively short ride today: two days scheduled to Casablanca…but nowhere to stop mid-distance…so we made into a comfortable three day trip!

A snack en route…

….before the last bend in the road! Then 40km straight, and all but flat!

So we broke the journey at Sidi Bou Othmaine…for breakfast. Brunch!

We have passed many of these butcher/grill places (choose your meat….and they grill it!)…but this was a bit of a classic! Huge!

Brochettes.

Tagines steaming.

…and it was delicious! But Iain gave up at 2 out of the six…so I ate far too much…and suffered!

Our last stop on our short day…and Iain was in trouble again!..

…..NB…the last time for not wearing a bike helmet in Spain!! So funny in that Spain are only the third country on the globe – after NZ and Australia – to have bike helmet rules…you have to wear one unless…you are a professional cyclist…unless you are in a 50km zone…unless you are cycling up hill!!…or unless….it is too hot!! Classic! Anyway…that particular day..it was freezing cold…and none of the other exclusions applied!)….

No trouble in fact….this guy was simply in charge of security of the water pumping station…..and on for a gas when we pulled over nearby.

But part of the military (military service maybe?)…for they do take their infrastructure very seriously here. Water and electricity are often accompanied by soldiers.

And the roads are magnificent! They really do put NZ, UK (& USA) to shame!! How can that be?

Halfway down the straight road…..

And on to Ben Guerir…where the only accommodation I could find was – unusually – at an out-of-town hotel which served beer!! Hahaha

We did not feel we had missed much….

….as we retired to the Green Cactus….who had no record at all of my booking…! But it did not matter!

Weird place. Huge! And empty. With a lovely menu….none of which was available!!

But…they did serve beer!

We were happy….!
