60. Vathy (Ithica) to Fiskardo (Kefalonia)

The last of our lazy days in the Ionian islands today!

Our dear apartment host arrived with a monster plate of pastries for breakfast (sort of onion-ring shaped donuts sprinkled with ginger and half a bag of icing sugar!!)…plus bags to take the excess with us. What a love!

She was apologising again…this morning for a tiny spot of rust on the outside gate! And was back to say goodbye when we left to catch our ferry back to Kefalonia. (…at this point…having been berated by Liz for my lack of knowledge of Kefalonia…I should add that yes, I had heard the name…but had not realised that it was a singular island..thinking it was more like a ‘region’. Live and learn!)

Our ferry company is “IONION”…probably more correct – given the Greek spelling – than Ionian. But I cannot help but read it as I-Onion! Must be too many donuts!

As soon as we had jumped off the ferry…we tried again to visit the cave lake of Melissani. And it was deserted! Too early for the Italians! Interesting wee jaunt….but after paying  a relatively hefty entry price, there was rather too much focus on the tip jar…for a brief ten minute spin in a boat! I would probably pass next time!

Pies and Frappes here………

Then over the hill (there is always a hill here!)…..for a plunge down a hugely steep road…..for a plunge at Myrtos beach.

The water was once again a beautiful blue. But usually…when you are in it, the bluenesses dissipates somewhat…and you can see to the bottom. Here it was like blue milk. And I could not even see my feet.

And lots more absurd selfie sessions….

We braced ourselves for the ride back up again…getting very hot now!….with a promise of a beer at the top….to replace the bucket loads of sweat pouring off me!

A short additional climb afterwards….and we then ran along a contour for over 10kms! Dead flat…at a height of around 300m! Gorgeous ride…!

Before the long flowing brake-less descent to Fiskardo, our departure port.

And it was rammed. Full of boats. Folk on day trips. Silk Cut cigarettes (the first I have seen in Greece…so doubtless full of Brits!). Sweet place…but spoiled really by too many, too-big boats!

Managed more time on the beach…before meeting up with friends of Shennae for beers and dinner! Her ex-London flatmate…plus a co-paramedic of his. Funny coincidence that they were in Kefalonia at the same time! Good fun evening! (…we all forgot to take photographs!).

Dave had just failed his UK residency test paper! Has lived there over five years. English as his native language….and failed with questions which the majority of Brits would not be able to answer. Eg..which country is represented by the red diagonal cross on the Union Jack. (…it is Northern Ireland…but many many – probably most – folk would not know that!). It really is so ridiculous! “Competing” against folk who cannot speak English…but pass because they have swotted for the test! With a huge shortage of paramedics…the UK should be welcoming him with open arms…not subjecting him to absurd and silly bollocks tests to prove he is worthy!
